Statutory Guidance Review to Proceed | 22 Jul 2010

Environmental Protection UK can confirm that the review of the contaminated land statutory guidance has received ministerial approval and will proceed.

The change of government had created uncertainty over plans to review and amend Defra Circular 01/2006 which underpins the contaminated land regime under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The decision by the new government to proceed follows a series of informal meetings with stakeholders in the Spring, which revealed widespread support within the sector for the guidance to be updated and improved.

Environmental Protection UK's Lisa Crews said: "Following meetings with the team at Defra, we believe this review presents an opportunity to make beneficial changes which would bring greater clarity to practitioners and help drive action under the regime."

Defra plans to hold a 12 week public consultation on proposed changes later this year.

Plans to review and amend the guidance were first announced in February 2010. Environmental Protection UK has been involved in stakeholder meetings to date and will continue to represent the views and interests of our members.
