Air is polluted when it contains substances that can cause health problems, damage crops or materials or cause loss of amenity (e.g. through reduced visibility, dirt or smell). Pollution affects us all, impacting on our health, ecosystems, crop growth, buildings and materials. Some air pollutants occur naturally, but human activities are responsible for most air pollution. Transport, industry and energy production can use all cause air pollution.

The main pollutants are particles (from smoke, vehicle emissions, pollen and industry etc), Nitrogen Dioxide,Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Toxic Organic Micro-Pollutants (TOMPs) and Lead.
