Effects of Environmental Noise on Health | 10 Aug 2009

Following the publication of the Health Protection Agency draft report on the effect of environmental noise on health last month, we have responded highlighting a number of concerns and recommendations.

The long awaited report was prepared by an ad-hoc expert group on behalf of the Department of Health and Defra, in response to increasing public concern about possible adverse effects of noise on health.

Whilst Environmental Protection UK welcome the publication of the report, we have highlighted a number of concerns and recommendations in our response:

  • Proper application of the precautionary principle to protect health from environmental noise
  • Research recommendations are helpful but guidance on prioritisation is necessary
  • Clarity on conclusions is required. We recommend highlighting acknowledged impacts to encourage progress in health protection
  • Regulation of Environmental Noise - simplification of regulation unnecessary
  • Expert Advisory Group on Noise and Health needed
