Noise
Noisy traffic queuing in London
Noise is defined as unwanted sound and is the most pervasive environmental pollutant. It has the potential to cause disruption, annoyance and stress leading to sleep disturbance, interference with communication and health impacts. Increasing development, rising traffic levels and the encroachment of a 24-hour society, mean it is crucial that the management of noise is adequately considered in planning and development proposals.
Our Noise work is aimed at promoting integrated policies and practices that encourage the effective management and control of noise.

New Information Leaflets on Noise Action Planning
Environmental Protection UK has produced two new information leaflets setting out the noise mapping and action planning process in England and Scotland. The leaflets are aimed at supporting work at local level in developing noise action plans and communicating transport noise issues to the public, professionals and politicians - who need to be engaged if noise considerations are to be embedded in transport and planning policy. A Welsh version will also be available shortly. Find out more >
