Transport
Traffic jam in London
Transport is the biggest source of air and noise pollution in the UK. Surface transport for example is responsible for around a quarter of UK emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) - a major contributor to climate change, and traffic noise blights many neighbourhoods. Air quality in the UK is slowly improving, but many areas still fail to meet national air quality objectives and European limit values for some pollutants - particularly particles and nitrogen dioxide. In town centres and alongside busy roads, motor vehicles are responsible for most local pollution and most environmental noise. The noise and air quality impact of aviation is also a major concern.
Environmental Protection UK deals with transport issues through our Air Quality Committee and Ambient Noise Committee, as well as our Biomethane Transport Forum. We campaigned for an effective car labelling system and are also concerned about the growing environmental impacts of aviation.
Our Transport Emissions Calculator enables you to measure the environmental impact of your journeys in some interesting ways! See also our Travel Buster - a teaching resource for 7 - 11 year olds.
