Biomethane Transport Forum
The Biomethane for Transport Forum is a networking community of organisations from the private and pubic sectors with interests in the development of biomethane as a road transport fuel.
Biogas is produced from anaerobic digestion of wet organic waste. It can be upgraded to biomethane, by removing carbon dioxide, water, and impurities, and burned in vehicles designed to run on compressed natural gas. We believe biomethane could contribute significantly to solving waste management problems and providing renewable energy to the UK transport fleet.
Biomethane for Transport were officially launched in May 2007, following a study and subsequent conference during 2006, which concluded that a significant proportion of the UK's road transport fuel needs could be supplied by biomethane formed from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste. As additional benefits the process could reduce waste sent to landfill and also produce potentially valuable by-products.
The aim of the group is to act as one voice for all those pressing for development of this unique resource. Membership is free and open to all.
The group consists of two sections:
- A Stakeholder Network – This acts as a focal point for meetings (physical and web) and conferences. Members can also access a developing data store for web content (technical reports, policy documents, news updates, diary notices, blogs and thought pieces, etc) related to biomethane activities in the UK and overseas.
- The Steering Group – Thisprovides an organisational centre for the network, acting as a focal point for the collation and assessment of information, and guiding development of the network.
The group's initial chair is Professor John Murlis (UCL). Environmental Protection UK and CENEX supply secretariat services.
The main website for the Forum is www.biomethane.org.uk
