Travel Buster

Travel Buster Website

The Travel Buster is a free interactive teaching resource for pupils aged 7-11 years old, at key stage 2, aimed at raising awareness of the impacts of transport. In particular it shows how their journey to school can have an impact on their health, air pollution, and noise pollution, and encourages them to take simple steps to reduce it.

The Travel Buster gives pupils a rating for the journey to school, based on how they travel and how far it is. They are then able to make a pledge to improve their school travel – using ideas from the School Travel Facts and the School Travel Tips handouts. For example, walking or cycling to school more often, or taking the bus instead of going by car.

The exercise uses animation and sounds throughout to demonstrate the impact of their journey to school, and there is also a fun quiz where they can apply what they have learnt.

Transport is one of the biggest sources of pollution in the UK, contributing to poor air quality, climate change, congestion and noise disturbance. Surface transport for example is responsible for around a quarter of UK emissions of carbon dioxide. Of the 33 million vehicles on our roads, 27 million are cars.

Whilst travel by car may often be the only practicable option, there are simple steps we can all take to reduce the number of journeys we take and their impact on the environment.
