Northern Division Biography

The Northern Division of Environmental Protection UK was inaugurated in 1972. The Division covers a wide geographical area, stretching from the borders of Scotland, Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales, down to the edge of the North York Moors in the south.

Historically, membership was extensive with a wide range of organisations associated with it. These included heavy industry such as steel and chemicals, the fuel industries, coal, oil and gas, light engineering and manufacturing enterprises, the universities and other learning establishments. All these different interests being cemented together in a viable manner by the local authorities. The success achieved by this diverse grouping can clearly be seen and enjoyed today the length and breadth of the Division's area.

One figure stands out from the many distinguished personalities associated with the Northern Division over the years – Len Poole. Len was personally identified with the smokeless zone policies introduced in Middlesbrough in the late 1950s and 60s. He chaired Middlesbrough Environmental Health Committee for many years and during his extended association with Environmental Protection UK he was Chairman of the Northern Division for 25 years. During this period he became Chair of Council and ultimately national President. Now at the age of 88 he is a Vice President and until very recently continued to play an active role in the national activities of Environmental Protection UK.

In honour of Len's outstanding service, "The Len Poole Award" for outstanding service to Environmental Protection UK has been created. It is fitting that the first recipient was Jeff Duffield who was the Northern Division Secretary for many years. We would like to thank Jeff for his commitment and outstanding contribution to the Society over many years.
