Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a broad group of synthetic fluorinated organic chemicals which are extremely persistent in the environment. PFAS are used in a wide variety of consumer products and industrial applications because of their unique chemical and physical properties. Increasing awareness of the widespread presence of PFAS in environmental media and biota has heightened concerns about their potential risks to human health and the environment. Monitoring activities have detected PFAS in the environment and the production and use of PFAS in products has resulted in the contamination of drinking water supplies; therefore, PFAS management has become a topic of interest. During this presentation Francesca gives an overview of PFAS properties and usage and where these substances are likely to be used.
