Dr Mudway presented on the emerging evidence that air pollution has significant impacts beyond the heart and lungs, on the brain. These impacts are felt across the life course, from associations with developmental neurological disorders, to poor cognitive development in childhood, adverse mental health throughout life and ultimately dementia risk in later life. The burden of these health impacts have not been incorporated into current economic evaluations of the cost of air pollution to the executor and therefore the emerging evidence suggests the current estimates are a significant underestimate of the financial burden falling on national health services and social care.
